Events, Categories and Places
How events, markets, categories and places fit together, and how players find them
Players find events first. An event is the page a player opens, such as a match, a crypto round or a question. Inside it are one or more markets: the Yes/No questions players trade.
Platform Events and Your Events
| Platform event | Your event | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Phoenix: the football data feed, crypto price rounds, Scout, or Phoenix's desk | Your team, or your own Scout's drafts once you publish them |
| Who sees it | Players of every operator that shows it | Your players only |
| Who settles it | Phoenix (most settle on their own from the feed) | Your team, from your Queue |
| What you can do | Show or hide it, feature it, suspend your book | Everything: edit, publish, close, hold, void, enter results |
| Its translations | Written by Phoenix into the languages operators offer. You read them and can report a problem | Written, translated and approved by your team |
Both kinds follow your Curation: a filter can hide your own events too.
What an Event Has
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Title and subtitle | What players see on the card and the page |
| Description and image | Optional context. Images up to 2 MB |
| Category | Where the event sits in the players' category bar, such as Football or Crypto |
| Facets | Labels inside a category that players browse by, such as the league |
| Place | Where the event is about: Global, or up to 10 regions and countries. Required |
| Languages | The language it is written in, and a translation of each text in your other languages. Optional: nothing waits for them (see Languages and Translations) |
| Start time | When the event itself starts |
| Markets | One or more Yes/No questions, each with its rules, source, close time, outcome time and expected result time |
Categories
Categories come in two kinds:
- Phoenix's categories, shared by every operator. Phoenix keeps their names and facets.
- Your own categories, which your Content and Admin staff create under Events > Categories, with their own facets. Archiving a category removes it from players' menus and from new events; you can archive a category only once every event in it is archived. Restore brings it back.
Your players' category bar is yours to order: drag the categories into the order you want in Curation > Filters. A category shows in the bar only while at least one of its events is shown to your players, so a category you switch off, or one emptied by your other filters, never leaves an empty tab. See Curation.
Places
Every event has a place: what it is about, not where you are.
- Global, for events that are not about one place.
- Regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America.
- Countries: each country sits in one region.
An event can name up to 10 places. Phoenix's events get theirs automatically: a football fixture takes its league's country (a continental competition its region, a worldwide one Global), a crypto round is Global, and Scout sets one for each question. Phoenix places events by one rule:
- An event is about the country whose people its outcome concerns: a national league, election, court case, price or weather reading is about its country; a company about the country it is based in.
- A question between two countries is about both.
- A region is named only when the event is about the region as a whole, such as a continental cup.
- Global only when no one place is the subject: a worldwide competition or award, a cryptocurrency price.
The place shows on the event page and under each event in the Events list, where you can also filter by place. For your own events, Content and Admin staff set the place when they create the event and can change it at any time on the event page.
Places matter because Curation can hide by place: switching off a country or a region hides every event about it from your players, new ones included. An event that names no place yet is never hidden by a place switch.
Why an Event Is Hidden
When Curation hides an event from your players, the Events list marks it briefly ("Hidden by Place: United States") and the event page gives the full sentence ("Hidden from your players by Place: United States", or "by hand" when someone hid that one event), with a link to Curation for Content and Admin staff.
The Events List
- Tabs: Events, Categories and Translations (see The Translations Tab).
- Columns: Event, Owner (Platform or Yours), Status, Next deadline, Languages (one dot and language code for each language the event needs, with its counts in the four words on hover), and all-time Volume.
- Status tabs: All events, On hold, Awaiting result, Open, Draft, Settling, Settled, Void.
- Views: All events, Your events, Featured, Closing in 3h, Categories, Leagues.
- Filters: Place, Fixture, and Missing translation.
- Bulk actions on your own events: Publish and Archive. Export to CSV.
Review Checklist
- The event sits in the category where your players would look first.
- Its place is right, so your place filters show or hide it as intended.
- The title, image and description match the markets inside.
- Check what your players see after publishing, in each environment where you show it.
